Peter’s District Priorities

Women’s Healthcare

Advancing Women’s Healthcare

Peter is committed to ensuring that every woman has access to quality healthcare services, including reproductive health services, regardless of their background or circumstances. This means:

  • Comprehensive Reproductive Health Services: Peter will fight to safeguard access to contraceptive services, family planning, and safe, legal abortion. Every woman deserves the right to make decisions about her own body without interference.
  • Preventive Care and Screenings: Ensuring access to routine health screenings, such as mammograms and Pap smears, to detect health issues early and provide timely treatment.
  • Mental Health Services: Expanding access to mental health resources tailored to the unique needs of women, recognizing the importance of mental well-being as part of overall health.

Improving WIC System & Benefits

Enhancing the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a priority. Peter is focused on:

  • Nutritional Support: Increasing funding for WIC to ensure that all eligible families have access to nutritious foods that support healthy growth and development.
  • Health Education: Providing educational resources to mothers on nutrition, breastfeeding, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Access and Convenience: Streamlining the WIC application process and expanding the number of vendors that accept WIC benefits, making it easier for families to use their benefits.

Expanding Maternity Leave Protections

Advocating for the extension of maternity leave protections is crucial to support new parents. Peter’s goals include:

  • Paid Family Leave: Promoting policies that provide paid family leave for all parents, allowing them to bond with their newborns and care for their families without financial strain.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Encouraging employers to offer flexible work schedules and remote work options to accommodate the needs of new parents.
  • Workplace Protections: Strengthening legal protections against discrimination for pregnant women and new mothers in the workplace.

Providing Services and Resources to Single Mothers

Peter supports policies and programs that assist single-parent homes. His initiatives include:

  • Affordable Childcare: Expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare services so that single mothers can work or pursue education without worrying about the safety and well-being of their children.
  • Job Training and Education: Offering job training programs and educational opportunities to help single mothers gain skills and secure better-paying jobs.
  • Financial Assistance: Increasing financial support for single mothers through grants, scholarships, and housing assistance programs.

Securing Data Privacy Rights for Women

In the digital age, protecting personal data is more important than ever. Peter will:

  • Strengthen Data Protection Laws: Advocate for robust privacy laws that safeguard sensitive health information, especially data collected through cycle tracking and other health apps.
  • Transparency and Consent: Ensure that women are fully informed about how their data is used and require explicit consent for data sharing.
  • Accountability for Violations: Implement strict penalties for companies that misuse or fail to protect personal health information.

Ending Gender-Based Violence

Peter is dedicated to supporting initiatives aimed at preventing gender-based violence, including domestic violence and sexual assault. His approach involves:

  • Increased Funding for Services: Securing more funding for shelters, counseling, and support services for survivors of gender-based violence.
  • Prevention Programs: Investing in education and prevention programs that address the root causes of violence and promote healthy, respectful relationships.
  • Legal Protections: Strengthening laws and enforcement to protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable, ensuring that survivors have access to justice.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Rights

Equitable access to healthcare, employment, housing, and other essential services for the LGBTQ+ community is a cornerstone of Peter’s platform. He supports:

  • Inclusive Healthcare: Promoting healthcare policies that address the specific needs of LGBTQ+ individuals, including access to hormone therapy, mental health services, and HIV/AIDS care.
  • Anti-Discrimination Laws: Strengthening and enforcing laws that protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
  • Community Support: Funding programs and organizations that provide support, education, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, fostering a more inclusive and accepting society.
The Environment

Our environment is not just a backdrop—it’s our legacy and our responsibility. As a candidate committed to environmental stewardship, I believe it’s imperative to take immediate action on issues critical to our neighborhoods.

Having served as a City Councilman for over 9 years, I successfully fought to restore our curbside recycling program and gained firsthand knowledge of our local environmental challenges. If I am re-elected as your representative in Lansing, I will continue this fight by drafting legislation aimed at significantly reducing Michigan’s annual intake of trash.

My plan includes implementing fees on garbage trucks crossing the Ambassador Bridge to prevent Michigan from being a dumping ground for Canada and neighboring states. We cannot afford to delay—these measures are essential to protect our environment and public health.

Did you know Michigan leads the nation in landfill waste per capita? Annually, 3 million tons of trash from Canada contribute to this problem, disproportionately affecting communities like Canton, Wayne, Westland, and Romulus.

If re-elected, I plan to advocate for stricter regulations on pollutants and investments in water treatment facilities to address contamination in Wayne City. Additionally, I will prioritize flood control measures along the Lower Rouge River to shield our communities from climate change-induced flooding.

Expanding parks and recreational areas in Westland and Dearborn Heights is also a priority. Access to clean, green spaces is vital for community well-being.

Your support on August 6th will enable me to continue this fight, standing up against special interest groups that disregard our community’s welfare. Together, let’s act decisively to safeguard our environment and ensure a prosperous future for District 25.

Education

Education is the key to unlocking potential and ensuring equality. I am committed to improving our education system, ensuring fair funding, and supporting our dedicated educators in Westland, Wayne City, Dearborn Heights, and Canton. My primary goals are to establish fair funding for public schools and advocate for teacher development and equitable compensation.

Together, we can continue to make the communities of District 25—Westland, Wayne, Dearborn Heights, and Canton—thrive and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
